UPDATE! Landis Productions is proud to announce that Desktop Gremlins: Easy-to-build Papercraft Projects is coming to a bookstore near you and online retailers like amazon.com in Fall 2011!
Bad News / Good News?
If you've been following Desktop Gremlins for a while, then you'll know that my original target for releasing this book was 2010. Well, 2010 is over and the book isn't here! Why? Well, it's not from a lack of effort. But there are a few big reasons.
The "bad news" reason is that the U.S. economy tanked and most business owners like myself have been working hard to push through our recession. So for purely economic reasons, getting the book done in 2010 turned out to be impossible.
The "good news" reason is that the parameters of the project itself have changed! What started out as a book of 14 paper toys quickly turned into plans for a book loaded with at least 25 paper toys! All of them will follow the rules that make Desktop Gremlins truly special - NO glue, NO tape, NO knives - the only tool you will need is a pair of scissors and about 15 minutes of free time. Twelve of the designs will be new versions of your favorite internet download characters, redrawn to feature printing on BOTH sides of the page. The other 13 papercraft will feature designs that I could not release as an internet download due to printing limitations. (For example, I have a little curled up sleeping dragon in production that I can't wait to share with you - and the book will make this possible.)
The book will also feature a drawing board section and loads of extra surprises
Why publish a book?
I've always intended for Desktop Gremlins to be primarily an internet experience - a fun way to share my creativity and form community around art and design. Internet downloads of free user-printed paper models will always be a part of this experience. But often in my design process I develop fun characters that would require printing on both sides of a piece of paper. With glossy paper and ink being so expensive, publishing a book for fans of my papercraft will actually be more cost effective than having them print all the pages with their own equipment. PLUS it will allow me to fully explore the possibilities of easy-to-build papercraft with printing on both sides of the paper.
Follow me on Twitter or Facebook to keep up with my progress and get a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into the push to publish a book about cool papercraft.
