Time Touchers

The first thought on encountering a "Time Toucher" is to ask it to take you back in time to fix some mundane mistake you in the past or to whisk you off to the future to ride on a hover skateboard. But the truth is, they are just "touchers" of time enabling them to slow down or speed up the present reality.

So if you're under a tight deadline and ask nicely, one of them might let you have extra time to get your work done. But don't cross them or time will fly when you don't want it to or slow to a halt when you're bored!

ScissorsFun Zone -- Activities for parents and kids! I've used this papercraft to start teaching my kids how to tell time in a fun way. I ask them to note how long each of the "clock hands" are in the paper model and then discuss the personalities of each characters that hold them. Do they move faster or slower? It's an interesting way to excite young minds to learn something new and useful!

Another fun activity to do with the Time Touchers is to "extend" their magical powers a little bit and pretend that can really transport you and your child to another time. (Which is silly because we KNOW they can only offer a few extra minutes here and there!) Build a little fort in your room and perch the Time Touchers on top of it. Tell your child that when you enter the fort, the Time Touchers will zap both of you to "sometime" new -- it could be the past or the future. Have fun with it! When you emerge from the fort, make up stories and imagine all the sights and wonders that now lay before you. You might shout, "Look! Dinosaurs!" Or decide that the room has suddenly become a mission control space station readying a launch to Mars. It's a fun and easy way to inspire imaginative games and for the whole family to play. Your child will love the surprises you generate for him or her. (And you'll love the creativity that your child will bring to the experience too!)

I know I'm showing my age here, but if your kids are a little older (say "PG-13 safe") check out some of my favorite time travel movies on DVD. Of course the old standard is the Back to the Future trilogy starring Michael J. Fox. Time travel movies don't get much better than these three films. Perhaps the only one that could surpass them is the zany and silly Time Bandits by the amazingly creative, Terry Gilliam.
